He's Been Everywhere, Man!
Earlier this week, I was back in Portland, visiting family and friends. As Big Pops is both, we got together. And of course, there was food. My mother and brother joined me for breakfast at Bob's Red Mill where Ralph regaled us with selections from his upcoming memoir (When's it coming? Hurry it up!), Once a Kid.
Ralph read from a chapter-in-progress called "Fun Cities", briefly detailing his adventures in various cities throughout the world! Have a listen to these wild excerpts below!

Santa's Advance Man
Shh! What's that? Is it up on the roof? A little rustling? A faint scurrying? No, it's not the roof. Maybe by the fireplace, a flash of red, a wink of green... CRASH! That came from the kitchen!
Yes, there he is at the counter with a mouthful of bocconotti (those sweet Calabresi tartlets) and powdered sugar on his dark top: THE ITALIAN ELF He's back!
The Italian Elf -- that voice in the tundra, that precursor with the thick Bronx accent, heralding the approach of Santa Nicola!
Only instead of giving gifts, like Babbo Natale, he pops into your cubicle looking for treats for himself (preferably Jordan almonds or Almonda Rocha). So have a bowl at hand, kids and coworkers -- the Italian Elf is here!
Merry Christmas, all you OaKers (that's Once-a-Kid-ers)!

"Get Your Own Cake," Says Birthday Boy!
Has it been a year already? Yep, it's the Kid's birthday again! He's been writing up a storm lately (Ralph does his best work while on vacation, and in the last year he's been to Tokyo and Kansas, banging out memories by the mile). The wild stories, from the past and present, keep coming. Wait'll you hear his personal history of the Yankees! As amateur editor of this Italian-American opus, I can attest to Ralph's bottomless well of wonders. Happy birthday, Big Fella!

The Magnificent Seventh Inning Stretch!
He's back! The kid does the stretch! Good to see ol' Ralphie Boy strutting in the bleachers. Back in the Bronx for a recharge! Surely the Yankees won after such a display!
Surely, they didn't. Those bums!

Parker Street Monologues #4
Now you too can learn how to do "The Bow-legged Chicken" and other dances (well, just one other dance). Ralph once again takes us back to the Bronx and his school days at Santa Maria School.
Please do not attempt these dances with a bad back (the poor fella was bent over like u cucciarell for days).
(I realize the video says this is PSM #3, but it's really #4. Do you know what a hassle it is for me to edit that with the equipment I use?)

Excerpt from "Once a Kid": Thanksgiving Memories from the Bronx
It was a joyful holiday -- off from school for four days with plenty to eat, drink and be merry about! In grade school this holiday meant a closer step to Christmas, the granddaddy of all holidays in my estimation. As a little kid a Thanksgiving play at school, turkey and all the trimmings along with every meat and treat you could imagine. I would even dress-up like an Indian and antagonize not only the pilgrims but anyone else I came in contact, especially family members.
My family was always very special to me growing up in an ethnic Bronx neighborhood and we'd celebrate with a Thanksgiving dinner that would go on for three to four hours at a time. And even then you weren't sure if it was over or not. After feasting it was time to rest your gut and sometimes having to down a few swigs of Brioschi, which was some kind of whop remedy for indigestion and even a bad case of gas. Whether this product did the trick, no one could be positive. I would think of the next day -- a Friday off. No such thing back then as "Black Friday," although it still was the kick-off of Christmas.
It's Almost Thanksgiving!
Young Ralph and his brother Jerry start preparations for the Thanksgiving feast. Jerry's got the goose and Ralph's got the can. And the dog is ready to lift the leg in case of a grease fire.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, now and always!

Yesterday was Halloween
That monkey blowing a whistle or eating a Tootsie Roll is our boy, Ralph. It's Halloween in the '50s with his brother Jerry (a zebra, maybe?), Uncle George and Boomba Roast Beef Grandma!
At least I think it's Halloween -- it is, after all, the Fuccillos!
Happy Halloween anyway! And All Saint's Day!
